Turkey Place Card Holders

I am always looking for a fun craft that I can do with my 3 and a half year old.  She loves to spend time with mom, being creative.  I’ve inherited a box full of random wood pieces and thought it might provide a bit of inspiration.  This time it proved to be quite successful!

First, gather your ingredients, you’ll need:
wooden “half” eggs (mine were about 2.5 inches tall)
3 different size wooden hearts, a small (for the beak), a small long (for the waddle), and a medium (for the feet)
brown, orange, red, and yellow paint
wiggly eyes
craft foam in brown, yellow, red, and orange
glue (I used gorilla glue, a bit messy… but it worked great!)

Start off by painting each of the wooden pieces.
Paint the “half” egg brown,

The medium hearts orange, the small long heart red for the waddle, and the small round heart yellow for the beak.

Next, cut a small oval out of the brown craft foam for the turkeys head

and feathers from the red, yellow, and orange.  I kept it really simple and made them about 2 inches long and just angled them from top to bottom.

Now it is time to start putting them together…
Glue the feet to the body, putting the flat side toward the back, and making sure the feet are glued tight.  This will help them balance and make it possible for them to join you at your Thanksgiving Day table!

While the feet are drying, assemble the faces.
Glue on the eyes,

The waddle,

and finally the beak.  Aren’t they cute!?!

When the feet are good and dry, start adding the feathers.
I alternated colors on each turkey, so they all have their own personality :)
You’ll want to lay them on their backs to dry, I laid mine on a piece of wax paper to make it easy to remove when the glue was dry.  It worked great!

When it’s dry, it’ll look like this…

Finally glue on the face.  When it is dry you can add the name by just slipping the card in between the feathers.

After looking at it for a while, I went back and added a second set of feathers behind the first.  Makes it look a bit more full and fun.

Have fun!  Hope your Thanksgiving table is adorned with these festive little guys!

  3. Allie, I was lucky enough to inherit a box of random wooden shapes from my mom, but I am pretty sure you could find them at Hobby Lobby, or Michaels. They both have a pretty decent selection. Hope you have fun making them :)
